The Inside Line: My first week as an Outlaw

I am midway through my second week as the public relations coordinator for the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series. So far, so good.

To be honest, I’m having a blast. I’ve been in the office working 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. as we’re getting ready to head down to Florida for the season-opening event. It’ll be 12 consecutive days of racing with five of those for the sprint cars (two All Star races we’re putting on and three Outlaw races).

From what I understand, we’re staying in a condo near Daytona Beach. It’s a 20-minute drive to the track and right near the ocean. Also, the temperature has been in the 70s lately. I’m just picturing it as paradise — or whatever I imagine paradise being from what I’ve seen in movies.

I’ve written a handful of press releases, but mostly I’ve been working on the program and media guide. I have a few stories ready for print and have updated a bunch of statistics. And I’ve been learning a lot of stuff that goes with being an Outlaw.

So far, I’ve talked to about half of the drivers who will run full-time with the series next year and I intend on introducing myself to the rest over a phone call before we get to Florida. In the meantime, I’m adjusting and learning, and getting more and more excited for the season to get underway.

We just booked my flight out to the West Coast for the month-long swing following Florida, and I’m ready to see a few friends in California between a busy racing schedule.

I’ll be doing blog posts as often as I can — or feel a need — on my website. So check back for updates from the road and behind-the-scenes action from the track throughout the year.
