Inside Line Promotions – WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. (May 13, 2024) – Derek Hagar was in contention to win the Hooker Hood Classic last Saturday before disaster struck midway through the feature at Riverside International Speedway.
Hagar opened the night on the right foot by hustling from sixth to second place during a heat race.
“We had a good car in the heat race and made it from sixth up to second,” he said. “That put us high points and we started on the pole in the feature. I got hung in the grease on the start of the feature and Howard (Moore) got out on us. Once we got to traffic I was able to reel him back in and get by him. A couple of laps later I got into traffic and got myself turned over.”
Hagar powered into the lead at the midpoint of the race and he led for two laps before contact while lapping another driver resulted in him getting upside down. He was credited with a 15th-place result.
“In clean air I don’t know if we had a winning car, but in traffic I felt pretty confident,” he said. “That’s where I made up my ground.
“Two cars were racing each other in front of me and I knew Howard was probably on my tail waiting to do the same thing to me as I did to him. I tried to make an aggressive move and get clear of traffic. Me and a lapped car met in turn three and that was all she wrote.
“It ruined everything on the car. It was an expensive wreck. Then the deal with losing the $3,000 winner’s prize and lap money added to it. In hindsight I shouldn’t have been as aggressive after watching the video because I had a little lead, but in the moment you don’t know he’s not right on you. It’s a lot easier to judge the decisions from the stands or watching a replay on video, but in the moment sometimes the split-second decisions don’t work out.”
Hagar plans to return to Riverside International Speedway this Saturday to compete in the McCord Farms 305ci winged sprint car.
