Inside Line Promotions – ALGER, Wash. (July 15, 2024) – Trey Starks captured his division-best sixth top five of the season last Saturday at Skagit Speedway.

A runner-up result marked the 11th total podium outing of the season for Starks and his first in the last five races.

“It was nice to get a clean night with no crashes or any other misfortune,” he said. “After what we went through it’s nice to not be rebuilding a car on our wash day. That’s definitely a positive.”

Starks qualified second quickest to open the program before he charged from fourth to win a heat race. That earned the pole position for the main event.

“It was on the fence, like Tulare style,” he said. “It was awesome, but our package isn’t tailored to that and I’m not the best at that. They had reworked the track just a little before we went out for our feature. The first couple of laps it was hard to tell where the top groove was. We got into traffic and I felt we were setting a good pace. There were a couple of mistakes I made in traffic that hurt our momentum. That allowed Colby (Thornhill) to get close. I made another split-second decision that slowed us down going into turn one. He was coming with a big head of steam and threw a close, but perfect slider on us to come right in front of my nose. As we came back around off turn four and came across the start/finish line the caution came out so that gave him a clear track.

“I knew the only way I was going to beat him was to find something different. I rolled my wing all the way to the back trying to make anything other than the top work. We were really close, but weren’t quite there. We raced hard for a few restarts and came up about a car length short at the finish. It’s tough to lead like that and not win the race, but I think we saw the type of race track we’ll see at the High Limit shows and we have a lot of ideas of what we can do.”

Starks led the first 17 laps of the race before he ended second. He remains on top of the Skagit Speedway championship standings by 50 points.

Starks will take this weekend off before returning to Skagit Speedway on July 26-27 for the Bob’s Burgers & Brew Summer Nationals.
