Inside Line Promotions - ALGER, Wash. (May 19, 2013) - Saturday didn't start as planned, but Trey Starks liked the result.
After his scheduled 360 race at Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma, Wash., was rained out, Starks and his team put a 410 car in the trailer and headed for Skagit Speedway. Despite a good chance of rain, the show was completed with Starks earning his fourth consecutive top-four finish.
"We've had four straight races with a top five," he said. "You can't just be there and win. You've got to be consistently a top-five running car and that's what we are at this point in the season."
After the change in plans, the team swapped a steering box before loading the car and heading to Skagit Speedway. Following an early issue with a power steering line, which didn't allow Starks to get a solid hot-lap session, he qualified sixth quickest.
Following the heat race inversion, Starks started on the outside of the front row of his heat race.
"We had a little bit of stumble on the start," he said. "It got such a good run up off the corner. We won the heat by a half a lap. The car was absolutely a rocket."
He led all eight laps for his first heat race win of the season. Starks then lined up on the inside of the second row for the 25-lap feature after the top eight were inverted.
"We ran third for the first four or five laps until a caution," he said. "It was a tricky track. It was racy, but it was kind of clustered. This week's (turns) three and four had a really big cushion in the main event. It was rough in three and four in the heats and qualifying. By the main it was really smooth and slick up to a real big cushion. (Turns) one and two turned to being pretty rough and trying to cut through the middle and go to the bottom."
While trying to pass Jason Solwold for the runner-up position in the second half of the main event, Starks dropped to fourth place.
"It seemed like it was a race where you couldn't get up and get going," he said. "It was hard to get in a rhythm."
Starks is scheduled to compete at Grays Harbor Raceway on Friday and Saturday for the ASCS Northwest Region season-opening weekend.
