Inside Line Promotions – ELMA, Wash. (July 22, 2024) – Dominic Scelzi returned to action last weekend after taking a couple of weeks off to recover from a vicious wreck.
Scelzi was a contender both nights at Grays Harbor Raceway, where he kicked off a doubleheader on Saturday by advancing from fifth to second place in his first heat race and from fourth to win his second heat race.
“We were really good,” he said. “We rolled the bottom to second in the first heat race and I felt that was good. In the next one we started fourth and ripped the outside to get around everybody.”
Scelzi lined up on the outside of the front row in the feature and quickly took the lead.
“We had three starts before it stuck,” he said. “I won the first two and lost the next one, but I got the lead on Lap 2 and led until around Lap 10. With it being my first night back I felt a little rusty. The lapped cars were all over the track and I was a little timid in traffic. I had a couple of cars block me and that let Colby (Thornhill) by. I pulled up to him in traffic and in clean air a couple of times, but wasn’t able to get back to the lead.”
Scelzi’s runner-up result marked his 10th top five of the season. It also locked him into the feature redraw on Sunday. He pulled the No. 2 to start the main event on the outside of the front row for the second night in a row.
“The track was really good,” he said. “It had a little more grip on the top, but it was wide and good. Turns three and four were really wide. On the start the leader tried to slide us into turn one and we drove around him. We set our own pace. Things were going well, but the engine expired around midway through the race.”
Scelzi’s mechanical woes relegated him to an 18th-place result.
The team has four races in the Northwest on tap this week with action on Tuesday at Southern Oregon Speedway in White City, Ore.; on Wednesday at Willamette Speedway in Lebanon, Ore.; and on Friday and Saturday at Skagit Speedway in Alger, Wash., during the Bob’s Burgers & Brew Summer Nationals. Scelzi won the marquee event last year.
