Inside Line Promotions – MERCED, Calif. (Sept. 18, 2024) – Dominic Scelzi earned his best World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series result of the season last Friday during the ‘Nashville West’ Showdown hosted by Bakersfield Speedway.
Scelzi was a top-10 competitor all night at the dirt oval in Bakersfield, Calif., where he qualified eighth quickest, placed third in a heat race and finished ninth in the main event.
“We qualified well and raced well,” he said. “We weren’t 100 percent, but we were much better than we have been so I was thrilled with that.
“We tested last Monday. I wouldn’t say we found everything, but it helped us more or less figure out the direction we need to head. I feel we at least have that sorted out with where we need to be with the race car.”
Scelzi was in contention for another top-10 run on Saturday night during the Federated Auto Parts Yosemite Showdown at Merced Speedway. He qualified 14th quickest and advanced from fourth to third place in a heat race. Scelzi was battling for a top 10 early in the A Main before he was caught up in a crash when a fellow driver spun out in front of him.
“That was a perfect example of the wrong place and wrong time,” he said. “It wasn’t our fault, but we have a bent up race car.”
Scelzi rallied from the back of the pack to finish 18th.
The final World of Outlaws weekend on the West Coast is this Friday and Saturday at Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, Calif., which hosts the $83,000-to-win Dennis Roth Classic.
“I hope we are better,” Scelzi said. “We don’t have a whole lot of races left this year. Fingers crossed we can get ourselves on the right track this weekend.”
